It was… it was the library in one of my childhood homes, this one in Sumner, MD right on the DC line. That’s my mother at the desk, where she’d smoke and write and then lean back pushing on the desk to read what she’d done in a way that made the desk handles jiggle. That’s my little brother drifting around, doinking a maquette for a sculpture that in reality lived in the living room. He’s not on the bus, which did stop outside the window. The dogs were Humphrey & Higgins, the two most impounded animals in Bethesda Maryland. Higgins would vacate the chair when he’d hear my father’s car.
