Lani Ranch, Spring Valley, Nevada

Natural springs irrigating alfalfa are fed by snowmelt from Mt. Wheeler. The Southern Nevada Water Authority has bought most of the ranches in the valley and plans to pump as much as 60,000 acre feet of water a year. A drop in the groundwater table will dry up the natural springs and leave the valley a dust bowl. The Las Vegas water authority says that it will irrigate plants on the valley floor to prevent soil erosion. Protestors say it won’t work and that the Vegas pipeline will create another Owens Valley-style ecological disaster. Photo: Emily Green
