Abandoned buildings in Pioche, Nevada

Lincoln County, Nevada survives by capturing scant rainfall that supplements an ancient aquifer lying beneath its valleys. Lack of money and infrastructure to manage scant water has left much of the county undeveloped. Plans by Las Vegas to run a pipeline through Lincoln County and to pump that aquifer in a network of its dry valleys could reduce the county to a dust bowl peppered by ghost towns.
